Nakara Queen Residence came to BAYA as a partially constructed property that had remained unfinished through the Covid period. With a new contractor appointed, BAYA was commissioned to resolve the remaining architectural finishes, refine elements of the existing planning and develop the complete interior design and furnishing scheme.
Rather than starting with a blank canvas, the project required a selective approach to what was already in place. Significant elements, including the terrazzo bathrooms and other fixed finishes, had been completed, while numerous architectural details, surfaces and interior elements still required resolution.
A cohesive new material and colour language was developed to connect these inherited elements. Cool grey tones created a quieter architectural backdrop for natural teak, woven materials, stone and tactile neutral fabrics, while crafted timber furniture and subtle decorative detailing introduced a relaxed contemporary colonial character.
Bespoke furniture, joinery, lighting, soft furnishings and styling completed the transformation. What had been a fragmented and unfinished collection of architectural decisions was brought together as a coherent tropical residence with a distinct and considered identity.
The existing villa contained a mixture of finishes and details developed before BAYA's involvement. A restrained palette of cool grey, warm natural timber and soft neutrals provided a new visual framework, allowing the retained elements and new interventions to read as one considered interior.
Existing terrazzo bathrooms were retained and incorporated into the scheme rather than unnecessarily replaced. Their textured grey finish became a reference point for new colours and materials, complemented by black fittings, aged carved timber and warmer natural accessories.
Natural teak, woven cane, carved timber and tactile textiles introduce a subtle colonial influence without making the interior overtly traditional. Cleaner lines and muted colours give these more characterful pieces room to stand out while keeping the overall composition contemporary.
Custom furniture and joinery were used throughout to give the villa a stronger individual identity. Live-edge timber tables, integrated cabinetry, upholstered pieces and crafted details bring warmth and material richness to the restrained architectural palette.
Furniture, lighting, fabrics, decorative objects and accessories were selected as an integral part of the design rather than as a final decorative layer. The resulting spaces feel established and comfortable while maintaining the simplicity appropriate to tropical living.
